Encouraging entrepreneurship among Venezuela’s migrant population in Panama

For the second consecutive year, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the Activados Panamá Foundation carry out Migrando al Emprendimiento, a comprehensive and accompanying learning program that aims to generate an ecosystem of entrepreneurship among the Venezuelan migrant population in Panama, positively impacting access to livelihoods, family well-being, and the ability to contribute to the host communities and countries.

For 2021, the program expanded its benefit coverage to 100 people, compared to just 50 people in 2020, and increased the amount of seed funding to be received by the 30 most outstanding. The 100 participants of  Migrando al Emprendimiento will work with a specially designed syllabus, have psychosocial accompaniment throughout the program, study entrepreneurship modules taught by the  Instituto de Estudios Superiores (IESA) and participate in online workshops with the technical and financial support of IOM.

The project began with a six-session cycle of workshops called The Life Plan, lasting from March 11 to the 16th. The purpose of these workshops was to identify those candidates who are motivated and active. Once the participants had been selected, the program's training phase began on March 29 and will end on May 28. After that period, participants will continue to receive support and guidance from their mentors for three more months.

IOM and the Activados Panamá Foundation made on March 8 the virtual launch of this second edition of the program, that also has the support of the Cámara de Empresarios Panameña Venezolana (CEPAVEN).

Migrando al Emprendimiento provides training and accompaniment to entrepreneurs, along with seed funding. The program stimulates entrepreneurial culture and is a successful example of the integration migrants into the economy and society, and the empowerment of agents of change.

¡Unidos aportamos más!, the program’s slogan, conveys this idea of togetherness and demonstrates that together we really can contribute more to our communities.
